In the past hysterectomy was the only reliable way to treat heavy periods. The ACSQHC (Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care) has become aware of the high rates of hysterectomy in Australia. Hysterectomy is a major operation. Often lesser therapies such as hormones, Mirena coil or endometrial ablation can be tried first if appropriate. The ACSQHC is studying this and hoping for a drop in hysterectomy rates.
