New Research On Drinking During Pregnancy
The new research published in the British Medical Journal, suggests evidence of harmful effects on light or occasional drinking during pregnancy, is very limited. Despite this, women are still advised to avoid all alcohol during pregnancy, as we are simply uncertain about the effect of even low levels of alcohol intake on unborn babies. Read more

Eating Fish in Pregnancy
The American FDA has advised women to have 2 to 3 servings of fish per week. Most fish are safe, however because of high mercury levels, some fish should be avoided. These include King Mackerel, Marlin, Orange Roughy, Shark, Sword Fish, Tilefish, Tuna and Bigeye. Read more

Medication to reduce the risk of haemorrhage
A recent study of 20,000 women from 31 countries has shown deaths have been reduced by 30% following the use of a drug called Tranexamic acid if given within 3 hours of delivery. This is easily available and inexpensive medication and is just another step towards making childbirth safer for all women. Read more

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists have now endorsed delayed cord clamping (not clamping the cord until it has stopped pulsating for both term and preterm babies). Delayed cord clamping in preterm babies reduces the risk of brain haemorrhage and intestinal disease i.e. necrotizing enterocolitis. For term babies, delayed cord clamping improves iron stores.
