An extensive literature review concerning the use of laser for vulvovaginal symptoms was reviewed in the most recent Australian and New Zealand Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, April 2018. While there does appear to be some benefit from largely observational studies and small retrospective trials, there is no large randomised controlled trial concerning the safety and efficacy of lasers and the treatment of urogenital symptoms in women. This review urges caution in adopting this technology until its safety and efficacy have been established. In the meantime, using topical medications such as vaginal estrogens and hydrating non-hormonal creams would seem wise. This is an area where we look forward to further and more extensive research.
