For some time early clamping of the umbilical cord had been common obstetric practice, as it was felt that delaying clamping may produce jaundice in the baby. A most recent review suggests that this is not the case and that delayed cord clamping after 30 seconds and certainly before 5 minutes, reduces the chance of the baby becoming anaemic. This is certainly my current obstetric practice.
