  • Keep in mind that no matter what type of birth you might prefer, the overall goal is to have a healthy baby and a healthy mother.
  • Read educational books about Caesarean birth
  • If desired, ask permission to have pictures and video taken of the birth.
  • Learn as much as possible about the medication and anesthesia used during a Caesarean.  Ask about medication options and the possible side effects for you and the baby.
  • Practice the deep breathing and relaxation methods you learned in childbirth class. Use these to help calm you before the surgery.
  • Parental participation: the drape is lowered and the head of the bed is lifted up just as the baby is about to be born, so the parents can watch.
  • Shortly after delivery the baby is handed to mum for skin-to-skin contact.
